Rain..

If there is a survey about what kind of weather people like and dislike, the result is likely to be:
1/ Sunny: 50% like it. 50% no idea.
2/ Foggy: 50% like it. 50% no idea.
3/ Windy: 90% like it. 10% no idea.
4/ Rainy: 50% love it. 50% hate it.

Anything which can make people get so emotional on it must be measured.

There are hundred reasons why people hate rain. But rain lovers will show us a thousand explanations for their fond of rain. Rain is the example for how irrational we are, or, we may say, how human we are.

People love what is rare. In comparison with sunlight, rain must be rarer. I have never been to England, Seattle or Hue, so I have never experienced having 300 rainy days in a year. Most days of our lifetime, we live under the sun. Most days of our lifetime, we get up, go to work, eat lunch, go home, dinner, watch TV, chat a bit, and then sleep. Everything will be okay, if we are robots. No. We are human. We want today is different from yesterday, and from tomorrow. While we are stuck in our schedule, God helps us by give us rain for only a few days in year. Rain makes today quite different from the previous sunny days. Rain gives us a pause to breathe and to feel the world in a different perspective. People love rain because rain helps cool their dry days.

If we ask people to think of 3 words about rain, the answers will be: wet, beautiful and cold. Once again, I have little knowledge about the countries in temperate zone or in the poles. I do not know whether rain make it colder. But that is true in Vietnam, or at least, my Sai Gon. The pros and cons of rain is the coldness it brings to us. The colder we feel, the more we want to stay warmly with somebody. All you want to have in a rain is something hot, warm or cozy. We can choose to have a hot coffee. Or we can choose to hold someone’s hand. It would be great if you can stay with the one you love in the rain. And it would be terrible if you do not.

If you live in a big city, you may have another reason to love the rain: Rain “refreshes” everything. After the rain, the sky seems brighter, the trees look greener. Rain swipes out all the dust, all the exhaust. It is like coming back home after a hard day, take a shower and feel relaxed. Nature has its own shower, the rain. Suddenly, everything pauses for a while. Rain makes us stop. Time to look back. Time to recall what we have missed. Time to see the world in a different way. Breathe.

It is easy to understand why many people hate rain. Rain makes traffic suck. Rains make the street flooded and dirty. But rain, like its lovers, is the most "complicated" phenomenon. Though it is sometimes quite annoying, I believe that God have a reason to create rain. Unfortunately, I am not his servant. I have no idea why he created rain. But I know one thing fore sure: God is great and right when he created rain because there are many people on the Earth love it, for some reasons that rational men will never understand.
